    All AC/DC converters contain a built-in fusible device (either one or more fuses or a fusible resistor), so no external protection is normally necessary. However, some regulations require an external input fuse to protect against short circuits in the AC cabling or PCB tracks leading to the converter. The –ST or RAC-ADAPT options (PCB with screw terminal input and output connections) also contain an external input fuse as standard.
    A DC/DC converter can have the following connections:

    The supply pins, Vin+ and Vin –
    The output pins, Vout + and Vout- (plus a common pin for +/- outputs)
    A remote control on/off, enable or control pin (usually labelled "CTRL")
    A trim pin (to adjust the output voltage up or down)
    Sense pins (to compensate for any cable or track resistance losses)
    Power OK pin (an output signal to indicate that the output voltage is stable)
    Push-pull and full bridge topologies are often unregulated, making them best suited for use with regulated input voltage rails. Push-pull is preferred for 3.3V and 5V input voltage rails because the input current is shared between the switching transistors, allowing more power to be extracted from a smaller IC package. Full Bridge is preferred for 5V up to 24V input voltage rails because the input voltage stress is shared between the switching transistors, enabling it to efficiently switch higher input voltages. For regulated output voltages, wider input voltage ranges, or higher output power applications, Flyback is the preferred topology due to its versatility and ability to provide galvanic isolation.
    Transistor gates have defined switching threshold voltages and significant parasitic capacitances, which requires strong drive current to switch quickly and efficiently. To ensure full switch-on current, the gate drive may go up to a much higher voltage (+15 to +20V) than the switching threshold voltage (typically a few volts). To guarantee secure switch-off characteristics, the gate drive may need to go negative (-3V to -9V).
    In theory, yes, but in practice it is very non-linear. Adjusting the output voltage using an external voltage or current can also affect the regulation and short circuit behaviour, so it is not recommended.

    The trim pin (if fitted) can be used to increase or decrease the regulated output voltage over a limited range (typically +/-10% or -20%, +10%). Some switching regulators offer a Vadj. pin which can adjust the output voltage over a wider range (up to +/-50%).
    Connecting a resistor between trim (or Vadj,) and the Vout+ pin will reduce the output voltage. Connecting a resistor between trim (or Vadj,) and the Vout- or Gnd pin will increase the output voltage.
    Trimming is typically used to help compensate for the voltage drop along a long cable or PCB track by increasing the output voltage, or to reduce the output voltage to avoid over-voltage stress on the load under worst-case conditions.

    A power supply protection circuit that rapidly short-circuits (‘crowbars’) a power line if the voltage exceeds a defined limit. In practice, the resulting short blows a fuse or triggers other protection, effectively shutting down the supply.     Manchester encoding is a form of Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) used for low-cost radio-frequency (RF) transmission of digital data. Its main characteristic is that it encodes data in a way that ensures that there are never long strings of continuous zeros or ones. The presence of guaranteed transitions means that a clock can be recovered from the transmitted data, allowing the link to function with variable signal strengths from transmitters with imprecise, low-cost, data-rate clocks.
    A test procedure that determines ’safety margin’. A parameter is varied to determine a device's sensitivity or ability to perform, given a range of inputs. A large number of parts can be characterized to determine a safe range for the specification, to guarantee performance and yield.
    (MOV, or surge-suppressor): A discrete electronic component that diverts current from excessive voltage to ground in DC systems or neutral lines in AC systems. It is commonly used on the inputs of AC/DC power supplies to suppress differential input voltage surges. A MOV can divert and dissipate high energy, but reacts slowly and its breakover point is not well defined, so it is often used in combination with a transient suppressor diode that reacts quickly and has an accurate breakover voltage, but has limited power absorption characteristics. MOVs degrade with use.
    Operational amplifier: An amplifier which has inverting and non-inverting inputs allowing use of feedback to achieve a wide range of functions. Op amps can be configured to form amplifiers, comparators, logarithmic functions, filters, oscillators, data converters, level translators, voltage references and more. Analog mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and integration can also be easily accomplished. A rail-to-rail op amp can work with input signals up to its own supply voltages.
    Point-of-load (POL) converters are high output current, low output voltage switching regulators placed close to power consuming components to minimize losses, reduce electromagnetic compatibility issues and improve output voltage accuracy and transient response.
    Real-Time Clock: An Integrated circuit that contains a timer that supplies the time/date, usually powered by a long-life battery to allow it to keep track of time even when there is no system power applied.
    A resistor placed in a current path to allow the current to be measured. The voltage across the sense resistor is proportional to the current that is being measured. Typical value is in milliohms. A Kelvin shunt has separate current and voltage connections to increase the measurement accuracy.
