For railway applications needing to conform to the RIA12 and NF F 01-150 specifications for over-voltage transients, RECOM has developed a range of surge protection modules for PCB mounting. The RSPxxx-168 series are designed to be inserted before the EMI filter stage so that both the filter components and the DC/DC converters are immune to high energy over-voltage surges.
There are three versions with 20W, 150W or 300W continuous power rating. The surge protector output tracks the supply voltage in the range of 40 to 165VDC (pass-through), but then clamps the output voltage to 168VDC even if the supply voltage surges up to 385VDC. Thus, the RSPxxx-168 modules clamp any over-voltages to a safe value in order to protect the power module from being damaged. According to RIA12, the DC/DC module should keep working during input surge events.
