When RECOM developed the R-78 switching regulator in 2005, we soon realized its enormous potential as a perfect substitute for inefficient linear supplies. With an efficiency of 97%, no heatsink is necessary and pin compatibility with three-terminal linear regulators makes it easy to retrofit into existing designs. Over the years, the R-78 portfolio has been progressively expanded with higher output currents (up to 2A) and wider input voltages up to 100V, all in the same compact SIP-3 package. As a measure of the product’s success, the R-78 has been widely copied, but buyers should beware of inferior performance of other parts on the market and counterfeits.
RECOM has developed the non-isolated switching regulator concept further, with products in other ‘power module’ formats using ‘3D power packaging’ techniques. Examples are the high power density, low-profile, RPM series in a DOSA footprint, the RPX series rated at 1 to 3A in a low-profile QFN package and the RPL-3 product just 1.45mm high and 3 x 3mm footprint with LGA terminations. The RBB10 buck-boost converter is also available with adjustable 1V to 5.5V output with an input that can be above or below the output voltage.
RECOM offers evaluation boards for its power modules to enable rapid verification of product performance under customer conditions.
