Automotive qualified DC/DCs

DC/DC converters for use in automotive applications must be qualified to AEC-Q specifications for stress testing, performance and production process control, to reflect the harsh environment and to establish the reliability of the parts in their end application. For molded DC/DCs that integrate all components including magnetics, the appropriate standard is AEC-Q100, intended for ‘integrated circuits’. Manufacturers such as RECOM selling into the automotive market are also required to have a quality system compliant with ISO/TS 16949, including a Product Part Approval Process (PPAP), which ensures continuing quality of manufactured parts. The AEC-Q standards are a ‘base’ level and automotive customers can also require compliance with their own internal specifications, and a common one is that solder joints of modules such as molded DC/DCs should be ‘inspectable’ by automated optical equipment. Latest RECOM products using ‘3D Power Packaging’ technology include land grid array terminations which would normally require X-ray techniques for inspection. However, RECOM can now add the feature of ‘wettable’ flanks to their automotive qualified DC/DCs in a QFN package, which allows solder to flow up metallization on the edges of the package so that a good solder joint is verifiable.
RECOM has begun to introduce DC/DC converter products qualified to AEC-Q100 standards denoted by the ‘Q’ suffix to part numbers. The RPX-0.5Q and RPX-1.5Q are the first to be available and are non-isolated point of load converters rated at 0.5A and 1.5A respectively. Based on the successful RECOM industrial-grade RPX series, the ‘Q’ variants have been fully qualified to AEC-Q100 standards for use in automotive Grade 1 environments, -40 to +125°C, for most under-hood applications. The RPX-0.5Q and RPX-1.5Q input range is 4 – 36VDC, and their output voltage is adjustable from 0.8 to 30VDC (34VDC for the RPX-0.5Q). Each DC/DC is highly efficient with a tiny 3mm x 5mm footprint and a profile of just 1.6mm. Monitoring and control functionality includes on/off and synchronization inputs as well as a power good output. Soft start, along with full short circuit, over-current, over-temperature and input under-voltage protection is provided. The parts feature an internal ‘Flip Chip on Leadframe’ (FCoL) construction and an over-molded leadless QFN package with metalized ‘wettable’ flanks, for Automated Optical Inspection (AOI). This is facilitated by formation of a ‘step’ in the molding and leadframe which remains plated after mechanical singulation of parts in production.
AEC-Q100 Compliant Power Converters for Automotive Applications
RECOM has a program of development of parts targeted at the automotive market meeting AEC-Q qualification standards and with wettable flanks in a QFN package to enable automated optical inspection. Look out for more product launches in the near future.
