Regulated DC/DC converters cost more to manufacture than unregulated converters but offer the advantages that the output voltage remains stable with changes to the input voltage and load, even if the load falls to zero. Importantly, regulated converters also incorporate over-current protection so that both the supply and the load are protected from damaging current flow during overloads or short-circuit conditions. Thus a regulated DC/DC converter does more than just stabilize the supply voltage, it is also a crucial protective component.

For digital or microcontroller-based circuits, a regulated supply voltage is essential as the low voltage rail must remain constant over a very wide range of load conditions; the current drawn by a microprocessor in sleep mode can be a factor of a million less than when it is active.
