There are many applications where the supply voltage is fixed and the load relatively constant. For such applications, an unregulated DC/DC converter may be an ideal solution; it still offers voltage level conversion, isolation and short-circuit protection (/P versions) but is significantly cheaper than a regulated DC/DC converter. Additionally, unregulated converters do not contain opto-couplers which are often considered to be a reliability issue for high speed switching circuits, so unregulated isolated DC/DC converters are recommended for IGBT, SiC or GaN gate driver circuits.
