RECOM and RECOM Power Systems – A Strategic Power Conversion Partnership

Mobility
In April 2019, leading power conversion company RECOM acquired RECOM Power Systems (ex Power Control Systems), adding specialist expertise in the custom design of high-reliability power products to the RECOM portfolio and strengthening its power systems and power electronics capabilities.

With more than 40 years of experience, RPS has formed long-term relationships with demanding Tier-1 customers operating in the railway, medical, transportation, defense and industrial markets, delivering economical and proven platform-based power conversion solutions with all required certifications.

High-Power Converters, Battery Chargers, and Inverters

A major RPS product group consists of compact, high-power DC or AC input converters, single- or three-phase, rated up to 20kW, with customer-specified features such as n+1 redundancy or digital interfaces for control and monitoring. Products include uni- or bidirectional battery chargers with intelligent control for optimal performance over time, temperature, and load. Balancing units are also available, ensuring maximum lifetime and availability of series- and parallel-connected battery systems by actively controlling individual charge and discharge rates during operation and testing.

RPS has extensive experience in DC input inverter designs up to 5kW, offering single- or multi-phase pure sine wave outputs that are digitally controlled, fully protected, and galvanically isolated. DC input ranges from 12V to 800V, supporting modern EV requirements. These high efficiency designs are typically delivered in 19” rack, open-frame, or chassis-mount formats, tailored to customer specifications.

Advanced Power Conversion for Energy Recovery and Rugged Environments

Power factor correction is a mandatory requirement in high-power AC input converters, and RPS has developed modular PFC front ends from 200W to 4kW for single- and three-phase operation. These AC/DC converters typically include comprehensive measurement and readout of DC output and input phase voltage and current via a digital interface. Custom mechanical configurations are available.

Bidirectional power supplies are increasingly used in energy recovery and balancing applications, such as when EVs serve as intermediate storage in Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems. RPS offers multiple platform solutions, including a 10kW design based on a high-efficiency topology, incorporating the latest wide band-gap semiconductors and advanced digital monitoring and control.

A particular specialty of RPS is power conversion solutions for critical applications and rugged vehicles. Commonly deployed in marine, avionic, and automotive applications, these rugged power products use advanced technologies to achieve high power density while meeting extreme shock, vibration, and EMC compliance requirements. DC/DC converters, AC/DC converters, and DC/AC converters have all been supplied, operating reliably in environments characterized by temperature extremes, high humidity, and corrosive atmospheres.
