Built-in Power Supply – There Is Finally a Solution!

Robotic arm with RECOM RACM1200-V AC/DC converter
Every developer looks forward to the moment when their prototype is finally working, all essential functions have been implemented, and the software is nearly complete, excluding diagnostic functions. At the next meeting, they proudly announce that all that’s left is EMC approval and a suitable power supply. However, given limited resources, designing a power supply in-house would delay crucial deadlines. The team therefore agrees to source a third-party product, and the developer begins the search for a certified, high-performance power supply. Although the market offers numerous options, identifying the optimal component is often more challenging than expected.

In this case, the power supply must comply with standard X, protection class Y, and even 2MOPP, as it is also intended for use in a newly launched ventilator. Additionally, the developer must evaluate the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures). Imagine a patient connected to a ventilator—and the power supply fails. This scenario must be avoided at all costs. Therefore, the developer needs to determine how long the power supply can operate safely without maintenance. This article introduces the RACM1200-V from RECOM, which addresses these challenges.

RECOM believes the safest option is the only option. The RACM1200-V has been designed with this principle in mind and comes fully certified to meet international safety standards. The power supply sets new benchmarks for compactness and supports a wide power range for reliable fanless operation in industrial and medical environments. A special base plate ensures efficient heat dissipation for up to 1000W of continuous output power. With two additional outputs, there’s no need for extra power supplies for multi-output applications. It features an adjustable 12V system fan output and a 5V/1A standby output.

Thanks to its high insulation strength of 4kVAC between the mains and output voltages, the RACM1200-V is suitable for use in a wide variety of systems: chargers, LED lighting systems laser equipment, analytical instruments, high-frequency devices, robotics, hospital beds and chairs, and medical technical devices involving direct patient contact. RECOM thus offers developers a power supply that supports their compliance and reliability goals.

The AC/DC converter is certified according to IEC 60601-1 and offers verified 2MOPP isolation (Means of Patient Protection) as well as minimal leakage current – ideal conditions for use in medical applications. While a certified power supply does not automatically ensure compliance of the end system, it is an essential prerequisite for approval and can significantly accelerate the certification process and reduce development costs.

The signal outputs and 5V standby output offer 1.5kVAC insulation from the mains voltage. The series includes an integrated EMC filter that easily meets EN 55032:2015 Class B requirements for both radiated and conducted emissions. This next-generation RECOM power supply complies with international safety standards for industrial applications, IT products, and medical technical equipment.

Input voltage ranges from 85VAC to 264VAC. The RACM1200-V supports 1000W continuous output with a 40mm high metal housing, contact cooling, and a footprint of only 102mm x 229mm. For up to 10 seconds, the output can reach 1200W. To maintain 1200W continuously, active cooling with 2.5m/s airflow is required. Therefore, the RACM1200-V includes a controllable auxiliary output for efficient thermal management.
