Single Cell Battery Boost Switching Regulator

RECOM’s R-78S series is a revolutionary, first-of-its-kind, boost switching regulator, which has been specially designed for single-cell powered IoT applications.

Due to its wide input voltage range down to 0.65V, high efficiency and low stand-by losses, the R78S not only boosts the output voltage of a single cell, but also maintains a stable, regulated output down to the last gasp of the battery voltage. Based on the simple plug-and-play concept of the standard R-78 buck regulator, the R-78S boost regulator is able to provide a stable 1.8, 3.3 or 3.6VDC output from any standard 1.5V battery cell or lower voltage energy harvester output. Battery-powered applications such as microcontrollers, WLAN / Bluetooth / LoRa modules or IoT systems can now be supplied from a single high-capacity battery cell, which in contrast to conventional 3V button cells, offers considerably more power for a longer operational life. A MEMS vibration generator output can be boosted up to a useful output vol tage. The efficiency of the R-78S series can reach 93% at full load, maintained at over 90% even under light loading. An enable pin puts the converter into very low power standby mode.
