Automotive Qualified DC/DCs and LED Drivers

DC/DC converters and LED drivers with automotive qualification are now available from RECOM. They are denoted by the ‘Q’ suffix in the part number, with ‘wettable’ flanks for the automated optical inspection of solder joints.

DC/DC Converters

Developed from the existing popular RPX range, the DC/DC converter parts RPX-0.5Q and RPX-1.5Q are non-isolated, point of load (PoL) converters in a thermally-enhanced QFN package measuring just 3 x 5 x 1.6 mm, and are rated for 0.5A and 1.5A loads respectively. Input range is 4 – 36VDC and the output is settable from 0.8 – 30VDC (34VDC for the RPX-0.5Q). The parts have been qualified to the AEC-Q100 standard for use in Grade 1 environments, rated -40 to +125°C, which includes most under-hood applications. The control and monitoring features provided include synchronization and an on/off input along with a power-good output. The protection includes input under-voltage and output over-current, over-voltage, short circuit and over-temperature. A soft start is incorporated and high efficiency is maintained at light loads for low losses in standby conditions.

LED Drivers

An LED driver module, the RPY-1.5Q, is also available from RECOM with an automotive AEC-Q100 qualification. This part features a precision maximum 1.5A constant current rating with an input voltage of 4 – 36VDC, covering 5V, 12V and 24V nominals in the same QFN package as the RPX series, 3 x 5 x 1.6 mm.
Analog and PWM dimming ranging 0-100% is possible, and a fault flag output and enable input are provided.
Input under-voltage, overload and over-temperature protection are included. While targeted at automotive applications, the RPY-1.5Q also has applications that support general LED lighting, visible and IR illumination for drones, robotic camera systems and as a precision programmable current source in test and measurement.

RECOM Automotive Technology

The RECOM over-molded QFN products for automotive applications feature fully automated assembly with advanced ‘flip-chip on lead frame’ technology, including integrated, shielded inductors for high efficiency, wide temperature range and low EMI. As is often now required by automotive customers, ‘wettable’ flanks which facilitate Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) are optional. These flanks feature a ‘step’ in the lead frame and molding which retains its solderable plating after the mechanical singulation of the parts during the last stages of production. This makes a ‘fillet’ of the LGA solder joint visible and inspectable for quality purposes, as an alternative to the slow and expensive X-ray inspection.

The production of further AEC-Q100-qualified parts has been planned for automotive applications by RECOM. Keep an eye out for product announcements.
