R-78 Series of 0.5A Switching Regulators Improved Again

R-78 Series of 0.5A Switching Regulators Improved Again News Image
Our popular R-78 series of switching regulators - a drop-in replacement for lossy linear types - is now available with an extended input voltage range to 40V and a wider operating ambient temperature to +100°C.

The new, cost-effective R-78CK-0.5 series is available with 3.3V, 5V, 12V, or 15V outputs, all rated at 0.5A with conversion efficiencies up to 96%. Low losses achieved mean that heatsinking is not necessary, saving material and assembly labor costs while freeing-up significant board space. Depending on variant, no, or minimal derating is required up to +100°C ambient with the parts operating at their minimum input voltages. At higher input voltages, the full 0.5A output can be drawn up to a minimum of +65°C, depending on variant.

Full input under-voltage, short-circuit, and thermal protection is provided, and the parts are certified to IEC/EN 62368-1 3rd edition.

Other improvements on the existing R-78E series include a lower allowable input-output differential voltage for the 3.3V and 5V output parts, lower quiescent current, and smaller package size in each dimension while still maintaining the standard pinout.

Unlike linear regulators, the parts can be configured to generate a negative output from a positive input – see the datasheet for connection details.
